Fundamentals of Spinal Manipulation
This 1.5-day course is designed to teach high velocity low amplitude (HLVA) manipulation techniques of the spine to practicing clinicians who want to update their skills or learn them for the first time. Clinicians will learn the mechanisms of spinal manipulation and safety practices as part of a clinical reasoning framework incorporating current best evidence and clinical expertise. This is primarily a hands-on course that attendees will be able to use techniques learned the next day in clinic. Attendees will learn selection of appropriate patients, patient education, safe and effective technique performance, and how to integrate spinal manipulation into a complete management plan.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Discuss current evidence relating to the use of High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) thrust techniques for the spine to include explaining the mechanisms of spinal manipulation
- Describe risks and benefits of HVLA thrust techniques as applicable to each region of the spine
- Demonstrate proficiency in the delivery of HVLA thrust techniques for cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacroiliac regions
- Apply clinical reasoning by incorporating evidence to a patient case relating to use of HVLA techniques
- Develop home program including exercises and self-mobilizations to maximize patient outcomes
